The Red Line
Students were called to submit their ideas for a Biola line of apparel using Biola iconography and classic Biola images, with a personal twist. 21 aspiring designers got their visions together to submit an overwhelming 18 submissions. The submissions were then narrowed down to 8 semi-finalists and then sent to our outstanding panel of industry judges.
Finally the Biola community was asked to vote on the three finalists chosen. The judges called their work diverse, wearable, fun, classy, progressive and full of potential, but after three days of voting, Adam Sjoberg was selected by as the winner. Sjoberg received a $2,000 grand prize in addition to a trip for two to New York City. The Red Line will be available for purchase in the Biola Bookstore during the anniversary year celebration.
The Red Line Runway Show, sponsored by Centennial Celebrations and Associated Students, marked the first centennial event held on campus.
The fashion show featured live music by Delta Spirit and Sparrow Love Crew with over 1,200 students, VIPs, and other guests. The gym was transformed into an unrecognizable red sea with oversized balloons, lights, and red drapes everywhere. With spectacular lighting effects and energy abounding the air was full of anticipation as the music faded and the models took the runway.
Nineteen models graced the runway with Red Line styles that included both casual and formal wear. Including over 42 styles. Last to hit the stage were Anders and Ella Corey followed by their parents President and Mrs. Corey.
The audience erupted in cheers as each model came down the catwalk, as students recognized their orientation leaders, dorm friends, classmates, and more.
Josh McBride, the evening's emcee, had the crowd in stitches with his “Ode to Biola” as he sang original lyrics:
Biola circa 1908
In Los Angeles, circa Hope and 6th street
The founders they decided “a school we must found,
And maybe in a hundred years they’ll still be around”
We are.
So we had Lyman Stewart, and RA Torrey you know
And TC Horton, he was great but his wife ran the show
And things they were growing, as God was on their side
But if you were a guy with long hair they wouldn’t let you apply
The decades they went passing one by one by one
The school was getting bigger so they turned to Sam Sutherland
He said “Now we’ve found a few acres, in the fields of La Mirada,
It’s a big open place to expand our school and complaints, well I’ve got nada”
Nothing.
It’s here we met Bob and Betty, and Ron Hafer, what a pal
And the giant Jesus mural, well, he watches over the café
Things are better than ever, due to Dr. Cooks awesome reign,
But now my friends, it’s time to board the Dr. Corey Train.
Tickets please.
So happy year one hundred dear school that we love
We like your new ID cards and the renovated SUB
And welcome to the redline, and the end of my song
So Biola here’s to another hundred strong.
Good years.
Biola also partnered with American Heart Association for the fashion show, with proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction of formal wear benefiting the organization.
The Red Line Runway Show is only the first of many events to come to celebrate Biola’s 100th anniversary. Save the date for November 3, for Biolafest featuring Mercy Me.
